Someone actually ordered a cake from me...

I haven't been too well the last few days hence my lack of updating, again!

Earlier this week a lady I work with asked me to bake a birthday cake for her mum. This is the first time I have been asked to make any cakes and only my fourth attempt so I didn't have a clue what to charge. Off the top of my head I came up with £20, altogether the cake actually cost me £22 to make and people have said I undercharged ALOT. But until I actually get more orders I can't ask for too much money, I'm just glad to be asked at the moment.

I was asked to make a two tier cake with lots of chocolate. She specifically asked for it to be black and white with a couple of flowers and possibly some feathers.

& this was the result

I am uber pleased with the result, it took me a little longer than planned but was definitely worth it.

I delivered it on Tuesday to my place of work after managing to drag my ill self out of bed and the reaction was amazing. I work in a call centre and in my department there are around 70 people and all of the managers were beyond impressed, maybe I'll get some orders when I finally get my ill arse back in to work.

Hello, Cupcake!

Whilst shopping in 'Hobbycraft' yesterday and spending a fortune on cake bits as per usual I came across the most amazing cupcakes book ever 'Hello, Cupcake!'. I've just been browsing google to try and find some images from the book and have now found out that they have released another book called 'What's New, Cupcake?'

This hobby is becoming far too expensive...

All up to date

I've made quite a few posts today to try and get my blog back up to date with my latest attempts at cakes...

I mentioned a couple of times in my posts about going to see 'Tim Minchin' which has now been and gone. Which I'm slightly gutted about because it went so quickly and despite my best attempts I didn't manage to meet him, instead he waved as he drove by in the taxi. I may of made a slightly embarassing attempt to chase the taxi but we won't go into that... =\

Anyway, I've now got 3 or 4 orders for cakes to do over these next 2 months which is funky. I'm making a Birthday cake this weekend so 'Hobbycraft' can now have even more money from me, lucky them!

My Birthday Cake

Soooo, my Birthday was on Easter Sunday, I turned 22! My mum agreed to let me bake my own cake and that she would pay for it, ching ching!
With it being Easter I thought that I'd go down the Easter/Chick/Eggs/Nest type of route and this was the result...

I'm not entirely sure what the plan was too be honest, I just made it up as I went along with it being my own cake It didn't really matter what the outcome was. I am however pleased with the result, I made a chocolate cake for the top and a vanilla cake for the bottom. The eggs are kinder eggs covered in fondant and the chick is entirely fondant (and may of made my niece just a little sick after she ate the whole thing)

With it being Easter we did have a lot of visitors and everyone complimented it and said that I should take this further so I'm keeping my chin up.

Easter Nest Cakes

As it was Easter and I hadn't made any cupcakes for a while I thought it was about time...
I followed a very simple chocolate cake recipe, along with a vanilla butter cream and finished off with some mini eggs.

They were rather scrumptious and were gone in no time at all, only thing I should point out though is that you shouldn't leave them for too long... the cakes taste absolutely fine but the mini eggs go slightly soft and just plain strange =\

The other idea in the book was to add some crumbled flake to make them look even more like nests, might give that a shot next time...

2nd Attempt...

Last month I decided to have another go at making a Birthday cake, this time for my boyfriends sister. She was turning 15 and loves her music at the moment, especially Paramore.

I asked her mum to trust me to make a cake and got my boyfriend to help out with the cost.
I still haven't quite mastered baking the cake the correct size... however I have definitely mastered the colouring aspect. After quite an expensive trip to 'Hobbycraft' I now own every colour paste you could think of for colouring fondant along with edible glitter, glue, pens and much more...

This is only my 2nd attempt at a cake and I came up with the design completely myself
Too be honest I'm extremely pleased with it, what do you think?
